ANCIENT TEXTILES | AYMARA |
The William Siegal Gallery's collection of Aymara textiles is the most extensive in the world, the majority collected over fifteen years of traversing the remote highland villages of Bolivia. The Aymara peoples, starting from approximately 700 A.D., continued the unparalleled tradition of weaving as it evolved through the ancient Andean civilizations until the late 19th Century. The Aymara textiles in our gallery collection represents the final stage when the art of weaving still symbolized the heart and soul of Aymara culture. This is only a selection of the historic Aymara textiles available, with a few examples of each type of ceremonial garment. Please inquire to see more of any particular category or style.
