WILLY BO RICHARDSON: Richardson shows no hesitancy to deal directly with color; both fearless and thoughtful, his paintings radiate serenity. Like Japanese calligraphy, his paintings are a record of his movement; his presence in the process is affirmed, yet they lack the agitated impulsiveness of mid-century action painting. Bands of color cascade like waterfalls over the entire surface. While still a young artist, his commitment to his current aesthetic inquiry is clear and consistent. We see this in his multi-year, repeated intense focus on a complex exploration of color relationships through strong vertical strokes - blending, interacting, and retreating. Richardson’s swaths of translucent color are intricately layered to create a unique emotional effect, spoken through a universal language.

ABOUT
“My work is not about the specific,” Richardson states, “metaphorically, I want my paintings to capture the energy found in rims of water after a stone has been thrown—gaining momentum as this effect spreads outward.” As Josef Albers said, “art is not an object, it’s an experience.”
